What is Somatic Bodywork?
Somatic bodywork is a form of therapeutic touch that invites you to slow down, listen to your body, and develop a deeper awareness of your sensations, emotions, impulses, and nervous system responses.
Touch is used as a gentle, attuned way of communicating with the nervous system. You remain an active participant throughout the session, as your practitioner offers guidance to help you track your experience and provides a supportive container for what arises.
Together, we create enough safety and support for you to notice what your body is communicating. You may experience changes in sensation, breath, movement, emotion, or awareness as you connect more deeply with your body. There is no need to force a release, analyze what arises, or move beyond what feels manageable. Rather than pushing the body toward change, we listen together for what allows you to soften, settle, and feel more grounded.
Through somatic bodywork, thoughts and emotions may arise that help you slowly process experiences that have felt overwhelming, incomplete, or difficult to integrate. Over time, this work can support a greater capacity to receive support, trust your own signals, and feel more at home in your body.
You might seek somatic bodywork if you:
Want to explore a deeper sense of embodiment and nervous system regulation
Want to feel more at home and connected in your body
Notice patterns of activation, shutdown, overwhelm, or difficulty settling
Are navigating a major transition or period of change
Are seeking support after a stressful or overwhelming experience
Want to cultivate greater self-trust, capacity, and connection with yourself
You don't need to have a specific problem or diagnosis to benefit from this work. Sometimes the desire is simply to feel more connected, grounded, and at ease in your body.
What to expect
Sessions are conducted fully clothed and may take place on a massage table or in other comfortable positions, depending on what feels supportive for you.
We begin with conversation and orienting to what feels safe and supportive. Touch is introduced slowly and only with your explicit consent. Throughout the session, your practitioner will check in and help you track your experience, adjusting the pace and approach based on your body's responses.
Over time, clients may notice a deeper sense of self-trust, greater awareness of their nervous system, increased capacity for regulation, and a sense of integration around experiences that may have previously felt overwhelming or incomplete.
How is somatic bodywork different from massage?
Somatic bodywork shares some qualities with massage and other forms of bodywork, but the intention is different. Rather than focusing primarily on muscles, fascia, pain, or tension, somatic bodywork uses touch as an invitation to slow down, listen inward, and notice what is happening in your body.
Touch may be still, supportive, grounding, or gently responsive. You may notice warmth, movement, emotion, changes in breath, impulses to move, or a greater sense of settling.
You are always in charge of your experience. Sessions are collaborative, with clear communication and explicit consent throughout, and your practitioner follows your body's responses to help you stay within a pace that feels supportive.
Pregnancy, Birth & Postpartum
Pregnancy and birth are profound experiences for the body and nervous system. Sometimes an experience that is difficult, overwhelming, or simply different from what you expected can continue to show up in the body long after the birth itself is over.
Somatic Bodywork offers an opportunity to gently reconnect with your body and support the integration of your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences. You do not need to identify your experience as traumatic, or retell your birth story, to benefit from this work.
Whether you are seeking greater ease in your body, support after a challenging birth, or simply a deeper sense of connection during the transition into parenthood, sessions are paced according to your individual needs and preferences.
Booking recommendations
We highly recommend your first somatic bodywork session is a 90 minute session. This allows for plenty of time for a thorough intake with your practitioner. While you may feel an immediate effect of somatic bodywork, the long-term benefits of somatic work often happen slowly over time. Your practitioner may suggest a cadence of continuing sessions based on your goals.
